SDMCU's headquarters are located in San Diego and the credit union has branches throughout the county. SDMCU offers a wide range of products and is a not-for-profit organization, serving over 20,000 members including the City of San Diego and other municipal-related organizations. Any profit that is generated is returned to all members in the form of lower rates on loans, higher rates on deposits, new services and additional branch and ATM locations.

Unlike other financial institutions, credit unions are not in business to make a few lucky stockholders rich. We are a not-for-profit, democratically-controlled organization designed to allow members to pool their savings and then lend it back out to one another. Any profit that is generated is returned to all members in the form of lower rates on loans, higher rates on deposits, new services and additional branch and ATM locations.

That's the credit union difference. But even among credit unions, San Diego Metropolitan stands out. For one, we've been around much longer than most. Decades before the Coronado Bridge became a landmark, we were already part of the San Diego scene. We were here, too, back when some of Balboa Park's towering eucalyptus trees were little more than seedlings. We were founded in 1934 by a group of City of San Diego employees looking for financial relief in the throes of an economic depression.
