State Employees Credit Union Membership Eligibility
- Employees of the State of North Carolina and Federal employees working in conjunction with State departments
- Employees of Public Boards of Education
- Employees of associations formed for the benefit of State employees, such as State Employees' Association of North Carolina, N.C. Association of Educators, State Employees' Credit Union, and non-remarried spouses of persons who died while in the field of membership of the Credit Union
- Persons retired from the above employment as pensioners and/or annuitants from the above employment or services
- Persons in the immediate family of current Credit Union members (defined as spouses, parents, children, and siblings of a member), persons living in the same residence maintaining a single economic unit with a member, and organizations of such persons
- Employees of agencies or departments whose employees are subject to the State Personnel Act
Employees of county, municipal, and related government units (excluding employees of county departments of Social Services, Health, Mental Health, and Civil Defense) who currently have a Credit Union chartered by North Carolina or the Federal Government and who are included in that field of membership are not eligible for membership in the State Employees' Credit Union - All members of the North Carolina National Guard
About State Employees Credit Union
State Employees' Credit Union, a non-profit cooperative owned by its members, was founded June 4, 1937 with 17 members and $437 in assets. It was operated on a part-time basis from the basement of the Agriculture Building in Raleigh. Over the years, SECU has experienced continued growth in membership and assets. As of 2010, SECU serves 1.6 million members with over $21 billion in assets through 233 branches, more than 1,000 ATMs, four Call Centers and a website.
In 2004, SECU chartered the SECU Foundation to promote local community development primarily through high impact projects in the areas of housing, education, healthcare and human services. Foundation projects include scholarships for NC public high school and community college students, NC teacher housing initiatives, SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals, among others.
The Credit Union offers a wide variety of products and services such as Salary Advance Loans to combat predatory payday lending; various mortgage options aimed at helping members who have become victims of subprime mortgage practices; "green" mortgages and "green" vehicle loans; youth accounts including FAT CAT and Zard to promote financial literacy; and Summer Cash and Holiday Cash Accounts to assist members in budgeting their finances. Automated services continue to expand with popular options such as online BillPay, Financial Calculators and Assessments and SECU's Car Buying Service available through the secure Member Access section of the website.
